Hostel Mamallena, Panama City Bookmark and Share

Check out Panama’s Hostels, The original Hostel Mamallena is our Panama City hostel, our hostel in Boquete, Hostel Mamallena, Boquete was our second to open and Hostel Mamallena has now gone international with the opening of Hostel Mamallena Cartagena in Febuary 2012 in the heart of Cartagena’s backpacker district, Getsemani.

Long rated one of the best hostels in Panama, Hostel Mamallena should be your choice for a hostel in Panama City, Boquete or Cartagena. Mamallena in Panama City is located in one of the cities old genteel neighbourhoods, Perejil. It’s survived the wreckers ball that has decimated most of Panama City and has kept it’s local charm and appeal. If you’re after the glitz of the big city it might not be for you(it’s only a short walk away), but if you want to experience a real Panamanian neighbourhood this is the place.

Walk out of the hostel and 50 metres away is Via España, the main street of Panama City.  Walk along here for 10 minutes and you´ll hit Panama City´s principle budget shopping area, Avenida Central.  It´s full of bargains and full of life, walk 15 minute along here and you´ll find Panama City´s only pedestrian shopping street.  It´s packed with food stalls, budget shopping and lots of people enjoying the sun.
Not much further away you’ll find all the best tourist attractions in Panama City and the best nightlife in Panama City.
Jump on a bus and in a few minutes you´ll be in Casco Viejo, take a different bus and you´ll be at the main bus station and the Albrook mall(the girls will love this place!).  A 5 minute walk to the water and you´ll be at the Cinta Costera, Panama City´s newest attraction.  This is a park right on the main waterfront that has really changed Panama City.  It´s great for an early evening walk to really experience the city.  Panama City isn´t that big, everything you´ll want to see is either a short walk, a short bus ride or a short taxi ride away.  And it´s all cheap!
Here at the hostel you’ll also get all the information you need about going to homestays and sailing in San Blas. That´s one of the most popular destinations in Panama and you really need to check it out.  Imagine white sand beaches and palm trees.  If you´re wanting the adventure of sailing to Cartagena then we have the most comprehensive list of captains and departures of any hostel in Panama.

Panama is a great, and safe country to travel in, it’s also pretty cheap. But you’ll probably want more information about where to go and what to do. Here’s some sites that will help you figure out what there is in Panama and where there are other hostels. We are sure you can find enough places to spend at least 2 months travelling in Panama.

Travel insurance: simple & flexible
Compared to Costa Rica and the rest of Central America, Panama is a very safe country. The odds of getting robbed are much less than in Costa Rica. This could have something to do with the fact that the police are tough and don’t look like boy scouts!!! But that doesn’t mean that nothing will happen, you’re traveling and it’s an exciting business. You should have travel insurance shouldn’t you? We’re recommending World Nomads. They are some of the cheapest around, they cover nearly everything and the insurance period can be extended even while you’re traveling. It’s not that expensive and it could cost you more not to have it.
You can buy, extend and claim online even after you’ve left home. Recommended by Lonely Planet, World Nomads travel insurance is available to people from over 150 countries and is designed for adventurous travellers with cover for overseas medical, evacuation, baggage and activities such as skiing and snowboarding.
